La Mouette Rieuse Catalogue

by Bart Beaty / September'98

That the comics production originating from Europe is currently outpacing that of the United States in terms of inventiveness and innovation seems difficult to dispute. New formats, techniques and approaches to the medium have combined with new artists and publishers to create an atmosphere in which the boundaries of comics can be expanded as never before.

When I began to write about European comics for the Comics Journal, I decided to limit my writings to the best of contemporary European creation. This was the case not simply because a survey of all of European comics would be impossible for a monthly column, but also because I hoped to direct non-European readers to the most exciting work from the continent.

To that end, I am tremendously excited about this catalogue from La Mouette Rieuse. Flipping through these pages one finds only the best comics from Europe. Selections range from innovative, young talent at L'Association, Amok and Égo comme X to the standard-beares of previous generations of cartooning talent. From Tardi to Trondheim, Alagbé to Juillard virtually every selection in this catalogue should find appreciative new readers and fans.

In the years I have been shopping at La Mouette Rieuse it has become obvious to me that they are the best source for European comics in North America. Now that they have expanded their operations beyond Montréal, I am positive that you will come to the same conclusion.

La Mouette Rieuse has placed best comics in the world at your fingertips. All you have to do now is choose.

L'HOMME À LA FENÊTRE by Mattotti

There is no real story in this book, just a fine line that ties together fragments of life. A story of a sculptor, a story of love, a man who is the spectator of his own life. A self-reflexive story about creation and time that passes. Mattotti, well known for his work with color, works here with line and shadows to give a piece where lights collide with black, where reading becomes an abstraction.

JULIUS CORENTIN ACQUEFACQUES by Marc-Antoine Mathieu

Julius Corentin Acquefacques is a prisoner of his dreams. His universe is similar to those of Kafka and Borges. Mathieu works also with the form of the album: a cutaway page, a spiral pop-up, photos... All of this gives us a surprising book, with a superb use of the black and white and a humorous way of telling those grim and fevered tales. The most important and extraordinary series of the 90s. A must read series.

AMPHIGOURI COLLECTION

CIMES by Vincent Fortemps

This is a completly silent book. Only the title enters in to break the silence. In a setting of mountains we are brought to a village. Here there is no hero, no central character, only anonymous people. One is at a mass, while others are just drunk. Drunkeness is the main theme running throughout pages full of dark, scratched and destroyed paper.

LES NÉBULAIRES by Denis Deprez

Deep intrigue, the search for the truth, Les Nébulaires is the story of a long investigation. Deprez is re-inventing the way to tell a story in comics. A feeling of loss in this work leads you to a strange mood. Godard-like, this book is great new wave approach and an amazing new work.

PORTRAITS CRACHES by Dominique Goblet

Portraits crachés is a book with no defined limits, just as if the author was ignorant of the laws of the genre. What is sure is that it won't leave you without any emotions.

HUMANOÏDES ASSOCIÉS

CHALAND INTÉGRAL by Yves Chaland

This is the greatest honnor that Les Humanoïdes Associés could pay to the fans and this medium. It contains all of the adventure of Freddy Lombard. Surely one of the most inventive series ever. It also contains Bob Fish, Adolphus Claar and some never published material. But the most awaited story is his Spirou story. Could we say that Chaland had the same impact on this medium that Hitchcock had on cinema.

A dark and satirical album by one if not, the greatest comics artists of his generation. A classic.
