Valentino, publisher

Tell us how you ended up taking such an important editorial role in the Image crew...

First, i am not the editor or the editor-in-chief, I'm the publisher. I guess the single most significant difference is that I don't edit anyone's actual work. I don't put creative teams together, etc... What i do is set company policy, accept or reject proposals and administrate daily operations. How i got here is a whole other story. Larry wanted to leave, the job required someone who could administrate, who understood the inner operations of the Image partnership and Image itself and had a handle on the industry. I felt that at this point in my life I could make a contribution, so I volunteered!

"An Image Comic", "Todd McFarlane Productions", "Top Cow Comics"... Can you explain how Image works, basicly? It looks a little confusing from the outside, with so many studios...

Image works much the same way a regular book publisher does. There are four major divisions. Each of the partners is a seperate, fully autonomous entity unto himself. We share no rights to characters and no money. Image Central basically facilitates printing, distribution and collections. We own nothing. For this service we charge a small flat fee there is no percentages. Basically, it's a co-op.

Who forms Image's "Internal Circle", the ones who take the essential decisions that affect the whole company?

That would be the partners, the owners/founders are the Board of Directors and officers of the corporate entity. All decisions of policy are arrived at by majority vote of the partnership (this has always been the case) under the "one man, one vote" rule. The partners are Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri and myself. We are the only persons empowered to set policy due to our shared ownership of the Image Trademark. I am given a lot of leeway by the Board in terms of policies for Image Central, but I am also answerable to the Board should any policy decision I make impact upon them. Image partners, by virtue of their ownership, are exempt from any Image Central policy.
